Evolution of Innovation and Convenience: The Miller Multimatic Series

Nov 26th 2018

When Miller Electric introduced the Multimatic 200 in 2012, this multiprocess power source, wire feeder, and gun package received a lot of attention because it allowed home hobbyists and tradespeople alike to perform MIG, TIG, and stick welding with just one machine.

Both consumers and professionals jumped at the chance to invest in one lightweight (just 29 pounds) welding machine that could handle many basic fabrication and repair tasks. The Multimatic 200 was a huge step forward in convenience and innovation, especially because Miller's Auto-Set functionality made it plug-and-play friendly for beginning welders.

The Multimatic 215: Even More User Friendly

In 2016, the introduction of the Multimatic 215 built upon the success of the Multimatic 200 by keeping the same capabilities (both can handle up to 3/8 inch steel for MIG welding, for example) while increasing the user-friendliness of the interface.

Typically, a newer, 'higher' model of any piece of technology is more expensive and more robust than the previous model, but this is not the case with the Multimatic 215 and 200. The Multimatic 215 actually costs less than the Multimatic 200, even though the core capabilities of the two machines are nearly identical. This flip-flop of expected pricing might be surprising, but the 200 could be considered "better" than the 215 in certain ways.

First, due to its highly protective case design, the 200 is suitable for rugged use and transport from one location to another. The 215, while certainly portable, is designed more like the Miller 141 or 190 – it’s durable, but better suited to stay in a shop or garage rather than being carted around to different locations. Second, it could be argued that the 200 comes with a better accessories, the included MIG gun being one example.

Either the Multimatic 200 or 215 is suitable for home, farm, or hobby use for quick fixes and light industrial use, and user-friendly accessories like the Miller MVP plug allow it to use either 120 or 230/240 volt power sources. However, these are not high-powered machines meant for heavy industrial use.

Why the Multimatic 220?

Since the Multimatic 200 and 215 are such capable, versatile machines, the next Multimatic would have to truly break new ground, and Miller Electric has certainly done so with the Multimatic 220.

Missing from earlier Multimatics was the capability for AC TIG welding, which is necessary in order to TIG weld aluminum. The Multimatic 220 is truly multiprocess in that it can do MIG, Stick, and DC TIG – as can the Multimatic 200 and 215 – but it can also do AC TIG welding at a maximum of 210 amps. This is a huge step forward in capabilities for any user who needs to do aluminum TIG welding, and the convenience of a small, relatively lightweight (56 pounds), and portable unit makes the Multimatic 220 even more impressive.

As you might expect, the ease of use of the Multimatic 220 is cutting edge, with QuickTech technology that automatically switches to the right process when the trigger or foot control is engaged. The Pro-Set features automatically sets weld parameters but also allows the user to manually fine-tune settings as needed. Interacting with the 3.5 inch color LCD display is a breeze -- it's highly visible and helpful, with easy-to-understand prompts and set-up images.

To further save time, two shielding gas connections can be left connected to the machine at one time -- no switching needed.

Who is the Multimatic 220 for?

The Multimatic 220 is no small investment, but its performance and versatility are an excellent fit for users who need portability, ease of use, and the ability to perform AC TIG welding. Like the Multimatic 200 and 215, the 220 is not for heavy industrial use, but it is more than capable of everyday tasks for hobbyists and light industrial applications.
