How to Identify Your Cylinder Fitting CGA Number

Feb 21st 2017

When you need to adapt a fuel gas regulator to a gas cylinder, finding the correct fitting can confuse even the most seasoned welder. With so many variables, and options to accommodate all of them, it’s imperative to be absolutely certain that the appropriate equipment has been chosen.

The first thing to consider when selecting a cylinder fitting is the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) Number Designation. In order to avoid the accidental mixing of potentially reactive gases, the CGA has standardized gas cylinder fittings. A document detailing these standards is available for purchase on the CGA website (CGA Standard V-1, Compressed Gas Cylinder Valve Outlet Connections), but a quick search on the internet will turn up several useful charts as well. A few common cylinders and their CGA Number Designations are detailed in the table below.

Cylinder CGA Number Designation
LP Gas Tank 510
Acetylene Gas Cylinder (Internal threads) - Large industrial from 60-400 cubic feet 510
Acetylene Gas Cylinder - Large industrial from 60-400 cubic feet 300
Acetylene “B” Gas Cylinder - 40 cubic feet 520
Acetylene “MC” Gas Cylinder - 10 cubic feet 200
Oxygen Gas Cylinder – All sizes 540

As you can see from the table above, a lot of variables can contribute to the determination of the appropriate CGA Number, and therefore, the appropriate fitting. As always, it’s extremely important that you do your research and ensure the safety of your project. If you’re having difficulty determining a cylinder’s CGA number, consult your local gas supplier.

Cylinder fittings generally consist of a CGA nut, nipple, and occasionally a washer for sealing. While most manufacturers have developed charts containing information specifying the necessary equipment, don’t hesitate to double-check that you have everything you need for a safe and proficient project.
